Cracking the Truth:

Understanding Cervical Spine Manipulation

Cervical spine manipulation is a manual therapy technique often used by chiropractors, osteopaths, and some physios. It involves applying controlled force to specific joints in the neck to restore mobility and alleviate pain or stiffness.

When performed by a trained professional, it can really work & be a good treatment option for joint stiffness & mobility restriction.

The one thing is certain though - the added benefits claimed by those performing it!

Research suggests that the ‘placebo effect’ plays a significant role in this & although short term improvements are noted, other conservative treatments—such as exercise therapy and education often provide more sustainable results.

The Rise of Neck Manipulation on Social Media

Social media has amplified the appeal of cervical spine manipulation. Eye-catching videos featuring loud "cracks" create an illusion of instant gratification, making it appear as though significant healing occurs in seconds. These clips often lack context, omitting important considerations such as proper assessment, contraindications, and individual variability in treatment response.

More concerning is the increasing number of unqualified individuals performing neck manipulations on social media. From fitness influencers to amateur "healers," many lack the necessary training to understand the risks involved.

Currently I have three people that have these so called adjustments & been left with long term problems. Frustrating to see how a 15 minute adjustment caused them months of agony.

The Risks of Improper Cervical Manipulation

  • Vertebral Artery Dissection & Stroke – One of the most severe risks, improper high-velocity manipulation can damage the vertebral artery, potentially leading to stroke.

  • Nerve Damage – Excessive force or poor technique can compress or irritate nerves, resulting in pain, numbness, or even loss of function.

  • Fractures Injuries – Pre-existing conditions such as osteoporosis or hypermobility syndromes can make certain individuals more vulnerable to injury.

  • Delayed Proper Treatment – Relying on quick fixes from unqualified individuals can prevent people from seeking evidence-based care that addresses the root cause of their pain.

A Balanced Approach to Neck Pain Management

For those experiencing neck discomfort, safer and more sustainable options exist beyond spinal manipulation. A well-rounded approach includes:

  1. Exercise Therapy – Strengthening and mobility exercises tailored to the individual's needs can improve neck function and reduce pain.

  2. Education – Addressing habits that contribute to poor neck mechanics can prevent recurring issues.

  3. Manual Therapy from a Licensed Professional – Hands-on techniques, when necessary, should be performed by a qualified clinician. One that explains the true benefit & how to self care.

  4. Patient Education & Self-Management Strategies – Understanding one's condition and engaging in proactive care often yields better long-term outcomes than passive treatment.

Education Over Sensationalism

The rise of unqualified individuals performing neck adjustments highlights the need for public education on safe and evidence-based treatment approaches.

Rather than chasing viral trends, you should seek care from qualified healthcare providers who prioritize patient safety and long-term well-being over quick fixes. True healing requires more than just a "crack"—it requires knowledge, proper guidance, and a holistic approach to musculoskeletal health.
